“Walk Hand in Hand with Companionship and Love” - Patients Care Series Activities of Clinical Research Center of Breast Diseases / Head and Neck Oncology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University

On the afternoon of October 25, 2019, to care for and promote breast health of women, help patients build confidence in defeating breast cancer, and enable patients to know more about breast cancer and rehabilitation precautions, as one event of patients care series, “Walk Hand in Hand with Companionship and Love”, jointly sponsored by Clinical Research Center of Breast Diseases / Head and Neck Oncology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University and Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association (SCIMEA), was held in Guangyi Meeting Room at Angel Hotel, Chengdu. Some medical staff in breast cancer related fields of West China Hospital, Sichuan University and nearly 300 patients and their family members participated in this event.

At this event, Professor Jiang Yu, secretary/deputy director of Head and Neck Oncology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Associate Professor Yan Xi of Clinical Research Center of Breast Diseases / Head and Neck Oncology, Associate Professor Luo Ting of Clinical Research Center of Breast Diseases / Head and Neck Oncology, and Attending Physician Chen Yujuan of Clinical Research Center of Breast Diseases / Breast Surgery were specially invited to share relevant knowledge with patients. It aimed to raise patients' awareness of breast cancer treatment and rehabilitation, increase their confidence in fighting the disease, and help them return to a healthy life at an early date.

This event was presided over by Associate Professor Zhong Xiaorong of Clinical Research Center of Breast Diseases / Head and Neck Oncology, West China Hospital, Sichuan University.

At the beginning, Professor Jiang Yu addressed the audience, expressed his gratitude to all patients and their family members and related medical staff who came to the meeting, and hoped that through this meeting, the majority of patients would have a correct understanding of breast cancer and cooperate with doctors' treatment, so as to get the best control of the disease.

Then, Associate Professor Yan Xi shared with the audience on the topic of Golden Key for HER2-positive Breast Cancer which included rich and practical contents. She introduced the definition and clinical significance of HER2, which enabled all attending patients to have a deeper understanding of the treatment goals, methods and medicines of HER2-positive breast cancer.

Next, Associate Professor Luo Ting talked about “Why Every New Medicine Must Go through Clinical Test before Entering the Market” starting with typical cases. She explained the concept, period, application group and purpose of the clinical test in a simple way, so that everyone could exactly understand What Is Clinical Test and get a new view on this topic.

At this patient care activity - “Walk Hand in Hand with Companionship and Love”, a breast cancer patient who accepted treatment at West China Hospital was also invited to share her successful experience in defeating cancer. With her personal experience, she encouraged every patient to take an active and positive view toward setbacks, fight against disease bravely, live confidently, and promote the splendid re-blooming of life like a flower. The daughter of this patient played a short video of “You Raised Me Up, and I Accompany You When You Grow Old” as a surprise gift to celebrate her mother’s 57th birthday on the same day. All the patients and medical staff at the meeting were moved into tears, and everyone wished her in unison: "Happy birthday!"

The final sharing session was a lively and professional Breast Knowledge and Disease Lecture carried out by Attending Physician Chen Yujuan. Patients were able to fully understand the relevant factors of breast cancer, how to prevent upper limb lymphedema, effective management methods and skills of self-recovery after surgery, and possible complications and countermeasures after surgery.

At the end of each lecture, there was an award-winning Q&A. Patients all actively participated in it with comments such as, "Such knowledge sharing is very useful for the treatment and rehabilitation of patients, and we have really benefited a lot from it."

After all the sharing, Breast Canter Multidisciplinary Joint Free Clinic themed with “Remain True to Our Original Aspiration and Keep Our Mission Firmly in Mind” and jointly held by Party Branch Committee of Head and Neck Oncology and Party Branch Committee of Breast Surgery, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, brought the event to another height. The expert team of free clinic included Luo Ting (Medical Oncology), Yan Xi (Medical Oncology), Zhang Hong (Radiotherapy), Chen Yujuan (Breast Surgery), Zhang Zhang (Pathology), Wang Yuanyuan (Imaging), Zhao Haina (Ultrasound), Wu Shaoyong (Nursing), Du Hongyan (Nursing), and Zhang Zhengfang (Nursing).

Patients inquire with respective concerns, and experts answer them patiently.

The event was full of care, love, enthusiasm, warmth and harmony. After the event, patients said that they had gained courage and confidence of fighting against the disease through experts' explanation of knowledge about breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, and sharing of personal experience and mutual exchange and learning among patients. This event promoted the communication among doctors, nurses and patients, and built a platform for mutual support and exchange, which allowed more patients to gain not only knowledge, but also warmth, strength and care. We wish all patient success on the journey for fighting against cancer and brave advancement along the way. God cares for those with a sincere attitude towards life.
