Joint Effort out of Benevolence and Warmth – Chinese Critical Care Analgesia and Sedation Summit 2019 Ended Successfully

From September 6 to 7, 2019, the "Chinese Critical Care Analgesia and Sedation Summit 2019" directed by the Chinese Medical Association Intensive Care Medicine Branch, and sponsored by the Department of Intensive Care Medicine of West China Hospital, Sichuan University and the Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association (SCIMEA) was successfully held. The purpose of this conference is to further promote the development of severe case analgesia and sedation in China, better implement new concept and new guidelines, discuss in depth the existing problems and development directions, strive to upgrade severe case analgesia and sedation, and drive the analgesia and sedation of our country to a new height.

 


As a summit academic conference in the field of intensive care medicine in China, the conference was made up of 11 special meetings and 48 expert lectures, where 89 experts from all over the country were invited and 468 intensive care medical staff from major hospitals across the country gathered together to discuss research results and clinical experience in the severe case analgesia and sedation.

In the form of theme reports, special discussions, and summary reports, the conference adopted satellite conferences, dialogues, discussions, special topic analysis, doctor-nurse cooperation PK, celebrity lecture, etc., to explore hot topics. In addition to on-site learning and exchanges, the latest technologies such as live video and timely online photo share was also used to have exchange with peers in health care industry.

Part 1 Opening Ceremony and Theme Conference


September 6


On the day of the opening ceremony, Professor Kang Yan, Director of the Department of Intensive Care Medicine, West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Professor Cheng Yongzhong, Deputy Secretary of the CPC Committee of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Secretary General Zhang Mengfan of SCIMEA, and Professor Guan Xiangdong, Director of the Department of Intensive Care Medicine, The First Affiliated Hospital, Sun Yat-sen University, respectively delivered speeches at the conference, and started Collaboration Group of the Severe Case Analgesia and Sedation of Intensive Care Branch of Chinese Medical Association.

Part 2 Sub-Conferences


September 6 - 7

 


The conference set up six sub-conferences for analgesia, sedation, deliration, exercise and rehabilitation, sleep disorders, nursing and humanity care, and strove to explore and establish consensus, implementation specifications, and operational procedures for severe case treatment in China through in-depth exchanges and discussions at different levels, from different hospitals and with different professional representatives with a goal to form the best clinical practice under the guidance of the best evidence.

At the analgesic sub-conference, the participants enthusiastically talked about the status regarding Characteristics of Pain in Intensive Care Patients, Pros and Cons of Pain on Organ Function and Immunity, and Analgesia Assessment. Experts kindly commented the discussions and gave their advice on analgesia assessment.

Regarding how to deal with different analgesic treatments, delegates discussed ABCDE clustering, doctor-nurse collaboration, goal orientation, and programmatic content by sharing current routine analgesic methods and patient-centered comfort goals.

How to conduct analgesia and sedation in patients with severe brain injury? The participating experts and representatives discussed the clinical application of ECMO and CPR.

“Does pain need to be completely inhibited?” “Will opioid therapeutic analgesia surely result in addiction?”

“Should we open the ICU ward to family members?” “How to balance family satisfaction and medical care?”...


In the two-day lectures and exchanges on different topics, there was a barrier-free dialogue between the doctors and nurses and a discussion on the rationality and reality of the implementation of standard analgesic and sedative assessment from the perspectives of doctors' duties, nurses' tasks, and doctor-nurse cooperation.

Based on the particularity of analgesia in intensive care patients, experts at the meeting proposed that the treatment of severe case analgesia should be goal-oriented, the process should be standardized, and personalized treatment and rehabilitation should be implemented.

At the meeting, a PK was also held for doctor-nurse cooperation precise analgesia and sedation case, where it promotes a close cooperation between the two to pay attention to the needs of intensive care patients, so that the analgesic and sedative treatment for intensive care patients can be accurately carried out.

 

 

Part3 Summary Report

September 7


After the discussion in the sub-forum, a number of experts from intensive care and related fields made wonderful summaries regarding pain relief, sedation, deliration, exercise and rehabilitation, sleep disorders, nursing and humanity care.


At the closing ceremony, Professor Kang Yan made a brief summary based on data collected at the conference and sub-conference conclusions. He also reviewed the theme conference, sub-conference lectures and the on-site interaction.

 


Professor Kang Yan said that with the development of intensive care medicine and the continuous updating of treatment concepts, analgesia and sedation has received more and more attention, where it should focus on the patient's treatment experience and quality of life. It is the goal of doctors and nurses of intensive care to make ultimate efforts in the intensive care clinical work, where they should closely work together.  It was also mentioned that the biennial severe case analgesic and sedation summit and the annual special meeting will be held in Chengdu, when intensive care  experts and medical staff are expected to once again gather in Chengdu to discuss the topic of severe case analgesic and sedation so that their benevolence can truly reach each patient in need.

In November this year, the "2019 West China Hospital-Mayo International Intensive Care Medicine Conference" jointly sponsored by the Department of Intensive Care Medicine of West China Hospital, Sichuan University and the Mayo Intensive Care Medicine Center of the United States will be held in Chengdu. This is the fourth consecutive year when a world class intensive care conference is jointly held by Department of Intensive Care Medicine of West China Hospital and Mayo Medical Center.
