2019 Adolescent Myopia Control and Orthokeratology Lens Application Seminar Successfully Held

On May 31, 2019 Adolescent Myopia Control and Orthokeratology Lens Application Seminar was held in the Howard Johnson Hotel located in the Hi-Tech Development Zone of Chengdu, which was attended by more than 100 experts and scholars. This seminar was hosted by the Eye & Vision Care Professional Committee of the Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association, and co-organized by Chengdu Eye Care Alliance Health Consulting Co., Ltd., Xiamen Nan Peng Optical Co., Ltd., Shanghai U'Care Medical Devices Co., Ltd., Shanghai Youquan Optical Products Co., Ltd and Shanghai FreshKon Contact Lenses Co., Ltd.

 

Liu Longqian, Director of the Department of Ophthalmology at the West China College of Medicine, Sichuan University, presided over the opening ceremony. Then the latest progress, or personal experience on the application of myopia control and orthokeratology lens were shared by the following experts: Jiang Yan, Director of the Contact Lens Specialized Department of the School of Optometry, Wenzhou Medical University, Zhang Xiaoxiao, Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-Sen University, Yang Bi, Deputy Director of the Ophthalmology Department of West China Hospital, Sichuan University, Yang Jiwen, Deputy Director of Liaoning Branch of Aier Eye Hospital, Lin Jiang, Deputy Director of Sichuan Branch of Aier Eye Hospital, Zhou Sujun, Supervising Technician of Ophthalmology Department of Southwest Hospital, the Third Military Medical University , Kan Qiuxia, Deputy Director of the Optometry Department, Specialized Eye Hospital of Daping Hospital, and Zhao Jianghua, senior member of the International Academy of Orthokeratology – Asia (SIAOA).

Liu Longqian, West China Hospital, Sichuan University


The first part of the conference was the sharing made by Prof. Liu Longqian from West China College of Medicine in regard to myopia intervention and the research progress of its mechanism. Prof. Liu gave a professional explanation and detailed elaboration on the harm of myopia and the common control mechanisms. With respect to the necessity of myopia intervention in particular, Prof. Liu indicated that, if the progress of myopia is decreased by 33%, the myopia above -5.00D will be reduced by 73%; if the progress of myopia is decreased by 50%, the myopia above -5.00D will be reduced by 90%; therefore, the intervention in myopia is very important, and it is necessary to develop personalized myopia control programs for children according to different myopia intervention mechanisms.

Jiang Jun, Wenzhou Medical University


Prof. Jiang from Wenzhou Medical University shared, regarding the hot topics of “Peripheral Refraction and Myopia” and “Importance of Post-Orthokeratology Care”, the clinical research data and conclusions on children's peripheral refraction under different refractive conditions and post-orthokeratology care. Prof. Jiang suggested: First, clinical research has expounded whether different refractive correction methods affect the peripheral refraction, and proved the safety and effectiveness of peripheral defocusing contact lens; second, since the contact lens surface sediment is related to various complications, the entire process of regular protein removal and nursing, including cleaning, rinsing, disinfection, and maintenance, requires attention to details to avoid adverse effect on eye health caused by improper care.

Zhang Xiaoxiao, Zhongshan Ophthalmology, Sun Yat-Sen University


Zhang Xiaoxiao from Zhongshan Ophthalmology Department of Sun Yat-Sen University gave an in-depth analysis and explanation on the application of corneal topography, mainly focusing on corneal morphology and how to read Placido-based corneal topography.

In terms of the second time lens change of orthokeratology lens, the skills and precautions have always been the focus of the colleagues in optometry. Zhao Jianghua, from the SIAOA shared his years of experience in this area with the participants.

Yang Bi, West China Hospital of Sichuan University


Yang Bi, Deputy Chief Technician from the Department of Ophthalmology, West China Hospital of Sichuan University, shared her clinical experience in the cause analysis, grading evaluation and treatment principles of corneal staining.


Deputy Director Kan Qiuxia of the Optometry Department, Specialized Eye Hospital of Daping Hospital shared the application and fitting of biaxial lens; Deputy Director Yang Jiwen of the Liaoning Branch of Aier Eye Hospital shared his interpretation of the fitting techniques for orthokeratology lens; Deputy Director Lin Jiang of the Sichuan Branch of Aier Eye Hospital drew the attendees' attention to the adverse reaction of wearing Ortho-K lens; Zhou Sujun, Supervising Technician of Ophthalmology Department of Southwest Hospital, the Third Military Medical University, shared the clinical application of the Oculus large diameter RGP in myopia control.

This seminar not only allowed the participants to enjoy an academic conference conducive to exchanging academic ideas, expanding academic horizons, and improving academic levels, but made a contribution to enhancing the diagnosis, treatment and research level of visual health care as well as myopia prevention and control in the region, and strengthening the academic exchanges and cooperation in ophthalmology within Sichuan Province.
