From May 10 to 12, 2019, the "Go to the Grassroots" academic activity, organized by the Sichuan Medical Association/Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association, was smoothly carried out, in an effort to facilitate the construction of professional teams and the promotion of appropriate techniques against serious diseases.
This activity was led by Kang Yan, Director of the Chinese Society of Critical Care Medicine and Director of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), West China Hospital of Sichuan University, and joined by Zhang Chuan, Director the ICU of the Third People's Hospital of Chengdu, Li Fuxiang, Director of the ICU of the Western Theater General Hospital, Lv Sheng, Director of the ICU of Panzhihua Central Hospital, as well as deputy director-level member Liao Xuelian, member Dong Qionglan, and member Zhu Junchen of the Youth Committee of the Critical Care Medicine Professional Committee under the Sichuan Medical Association, and Chen Baixu, respiratory therapist at West China Hospital of Sichuan University. Although the gale forced the flight en route to Panzhihua return to Chengdu on May 10th, these experts did not cancel the event, but decisively flew to Xichang, and then transferred to Panzhihua by bus. Regardless of the bad weather, they finally reached the destination until the middle of that night!
This training course was jointly organized by the Youth Committee of the Critical Care Medicine Professional Committee under the Sichuan Medical Association, the Critical Care Medicine Professional Committee of Sichuan International Medical Exchange & Promotion Association, and the Intensive Care Unit of Panzhihua Central Hospital. It is a provincial-level further education project under the theme of "Technology, Promotion, Cooperation, and Win-Win Result". A total of 326 medical staff from the ICU, respiratory medicine department, and emergency department of the medical institutions in Panzhihua, Xichang and Southwestern Yunnan participated in the course.
Xu Wenhao, President of Panzhihua Central Hospital, made an opening speech. Prof. Kang Yan, Director of the ICU, West China Hospital of Sichuan University, delivered a special lecture entitled SEPSIS BUNDLE: How Should It be Implemented Clinically. From the perspectives of removal of infected foci, selection of antibiotics, and organ function support, etc., Prof. Kang emphasized early goal-directed therapy and clustered treatment of sepsis.
Under the titles of Common Pathogens and Selection of Antibiotics in ICU, Liquid Treatment of Sepsis, Diagnosis and Treatment of Invasive Fungal Infection, Weaning Procedures in the Event of Mechanical Ventilation Difficulties, and Conduit-associated Bloodstream Infection, Director Li Fuxiang of the Western Theater General Hospital, Director Zhang Chuan of the ICU of the Third People's Hospital of Chengdu, Prof. Liu Xuelian from the West China Hospital of Sichuan University, respiratory therapist Chen Baixu, and Dong Qionglan from the Third People's Hospital of Mianyang shared their academic achievements and valuable experiences respectively. Centering on suitable techniques for critical diseases, medical record discussions were also organized in the main session, enabling the participants to realize that the diagnosis of such diseases requires mindset expansion, and the treatment of critical patients need multidisciplinary cooperation. The experts also shared the importance of the cutting-edge technology ECMO in life support for critical patients, and called for real-time intervention.
In the nursing session, nursing experts gave wonderful lectures, which range from research theory to research instances, from CRRT theory to on-the-spot operation, from ventilator alarm handling to early rehabilitation of critically patients. These lectures demonstrate effectiveness of appropriate technology application in the treatment of critical diseases, reflect the importance of medical treatment and nursing integration, and achieve new breakthroughs in nursing cooperation.
After this event, the participants claimed that they benefited a lot from the course; what they learned is practical and closely follows the development trend; whether it is a theoretical lecture or an operation demonstration, it is like a feast. This training session will promote the overall improvement of the critical diseases-targeted diagnosis and treatment technology and nursing practice in the region, and benefit millions of local people. After the meeting, under the leadership of Director Kang Yan, the group of 8 experts visited the Panzhihua Third-line Construction Museum, in a view to receive patriotism education and spread positive energy.
