Founded in 1958, Sichuan Provincial Orthopedic Hospital (also named Chengdu Sports Hospital and Chengdu Research Institute for Sports Injury), was the first sports hospital in China. Under the guidance of Marshal He Long, to make efforts to set up a sports hospital, Sichuan Provincial Orthopedic Hospital was established in 1958 by Professor Zheng Huaixian, the Grand Master of Kongfu Medical Science, and founder of Zheng Style Orthopedics of TCM which was named a non-material cultural heritage of Sichuan Province.
The Sichuan Provincial Orthopedic Hospital (SPOH) is the first Grade A tertiary orthopedic hospital of TCM in China, featured with TCM and professional talents with expertise. The hospital covers an area of about 25 acres, with the buildings covering an area of over 50,000 square meters. It sets up 14 comprehensive functional departments, 21 clinic departments and 8 medical technical departments. The hospital supports 800 sickbeds, with first-class medical care apparatus, equipment, and an advanced pharmacy.
At present, the number of the hospital’s staff is 792, including792 professional and technical personnel, 61 people of senior title, 87 people of intermediate title. The stuff team is composite of: experts granted special government allowances, guide teachers with academic experience of the national veteran doctors of traditional Chinese medicine, science and technology leaders of Sichuan Province, outstanding expert of Sichuan Province, health care personnel with outstanding contributions of the first batch of Sichuan Province, top 10 prestigious traditional Chinese medicine doctors of the first batch of Sichuan Province, prestigious traditional Chinese medicine doctors of Sichuan Province, top-notch young and middle-aged traditional Chinese medicine doctors of Sichuan Province, and plentiful senior professional and technical experts and scholars.
SPOH has achieved the three-dimensional development of trinity -- medical, teaching, and research. It has 1 state-level key discipline, 5 national key specialties of traditional Chinese medicine, 9 provincial key specialties of traditional Chinese medicine (special disease), and 1 provincial-level key discipline. This hospital is the affiliated hospital indirectly under Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the affiliated hospital indirectly under Chengdu Sport Institute, the further education base of Orthopedics -- the preponderant discipline of State Traditional Chinese Medicine, the standardized training collaborative base of the resident doctors of the State Traditional Chinese Medicine, the training base of the resident doctors of the Sichuan Traditional Chinese Medicine, the first national base of osteonosus prevention and treatment in Sichuan and the provincial emergency treatment base of traditional Chinese Medicine. It is the teaching practice base of 12 institutions of higher learning, including Chengdu University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Chengdu Sport Institute, etc. It is also the first Chinese Olympic Committee authorized “Designated Hospital of National Team Athletes” among TCM hospitals, the first designated rehabilitation hospital of elite athletes of Hong Kong Sports Institute in inland China, and the first teaching practice base of Taiwan Sports University in mainland China.
The hospital has established mutual cooperation and academic exchange relationships with dozens of countries and regions including United States, Russia, France, Japan, Germany, Hong Kong and Taiwan, etc.
